Immersion cooling, a method that submerges hardware components in a specialized dielectric fluid, provides an effective solution for cooling Bitcoin miners. It efficiently manages heat, improves energy efficiency, minimizes dust impact, ensures consistent cooling performance, optimizes space, and reduces maintenance needs of the equipment.
Nevertheless, this approach has its drawbacks. Initially, it incurs high costs and increases maintenance complexity. Moreover, it suffers from limited availability.
Consequently, Arkon Energy sought Kontena’s design and engineering support to develop an immersion cooling system that overcame these limitations. They aimed for a solution that is not only more accessible and easier to install and maintain but also cost-effective, all while preserving efficiency.
The objective, therefore, was to create an alternative immersion cooling system that is affordable, simple to operate, maintain, and implement as a plug-and-play solution.
Our solution employs a single-loop working principle, utilizing hydrostatics and a balanced piping network. Remarkably, this system operates efficiently with just one pump, primarily controlled by the settings at the dry-cooler. Our target is to achieve 1MW within a compact 20ft shipping container.
The comprehensive setup comprises one immersion container, and one dry cooler container with a pump house. As always, modularity is a key consideration in our design.
This project resulted in the development of our immersion product system which consists of an immersion system module and a containerized immersion solution, the L3-Immersion container. We make the choice of Castrol ON I DC 20 as our cooling fluid. Consequently, we’re proud to name Castrol as our strategic partner and continue working together on improving our immersion systems.
At Kontena, we pride ourselves on thinking outside the box and aren’t hesitant to take a hands-on approach. Significantly, this prototype was designed, produced, assembled, and tested in-house, with our partners joining in during the testing phase to emphasize our commitment to creative collaboration.
With our immersion system, clients can confidently step out of the traditional air approach to data center cooling and enjoy the myriad benefits of immersion cooling.

Our partnership with Castrol give us the opportunity to create a custom fluid for ASIC mining. This single-phase immersion fluid has been developed to meet the needs for data center, edge computing, blockchain, and other IT applications.
Our solutions aren't just innovative, they're also practical and dependable. This prototype was fully developed, produced, assembled, and tested in-house.
Our single-phase immersion cooling systems offer a revolutionary approach to efficiently cool electronic components, ensuring optimal performance and reliability. The system relies on a single loop of dielectric coolant for cooling so cutting down on costs compared to traditional cooling mechanisms.

One pump circulates the coolant, regulated by settings at the dry cooler, making it straightforward to operate. Single pump circulation involves continuously pushing dielectric fluid through a closed loop system. The fluid flows through miners, promoting heat exchange, then cycles back through a pumping container and cooling unit to maintain temperature.
Remarkably, the entire setup can cool 1 MW of mining power within a 20-foot shipping container.
